Preble, Walter
Walter Preble traveled seemingly unrelated paths to end up
in the camping (tourism) industry. His pre-campground
professional career was spent in the hi-tech industry,
working for companies like Planning Research Corporation
and ITT Courier. Capitalizing on his technical expertise,
Walter launched his own consulting business, providing
technical consulting predominantly to real estate-related
industries for a number of years. In the early '90s a
friend came along and proposed that Walter and his wife
become partners in a campground. Having grown tired of
the travel and constant ups and downs of the computer
industry, the Prebles quit their high-tech jobs and
purchased the Buckeye Lake KOA campground in Ohio in
1991. Walter stepped up to the challenges of owning
hospitality and tourism related business, taking an old,
tired, and substandard overnight KOA and turning it into a
"destination" type campground and more than doubling its
business in 10 years. The Prebles were also named KOA's
Franchisees of the Year in 2000 - the smallest KOA ever to
receive that award. In 2001, the then-new President and
CEO of KOA, Jim Rogers, drafted Walter back into the
corporate world, as KOA's special franchisee consultant.
For the past 2 years, Walter has again been traveling the
country, visiting campgrounds, consulting, and speaking to
a variety of state and national associations. His 13+
years of campground industry experience have provided him
with considerable opportunity to be involved in local and
national tourism and hospitality issues. <www.koakampgrounds.com>
